The Commission for Social Justice® (CSJ) is the anti-defamation arm of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America® (OSDIA), the oldest and largest national organization for men and women of Italian descent in the United States.
Commitment to Justice and Fair Representation
The mission of the Commission for Social Justice® is to combat the stereotyping and defamation of Italian Americans in the media, entertainment, and advertising industries.
Since its founding in 1979, the CSJ has worked to challenge negative portrayals of Italian Americans and ensure they are fairly represented. In addition to this, the organization partners with other groups to promote dignity and respect for all races, religions, and cultures. The CSJ actively monitors how Italian Americans are depicted and takes steps to address any offensive content. It also keeps other Italian-American organizations, email networks, and concerned individuals updated, empowering them to take action when needed.

Driving Progress for Italian-Americans
At the CSJ, we’re focused on making sure Italian-American voices are heard and celebrated. Our campaigns help raise awareness, honor our history, and push for positive change. Here’s how we’re making a difference.
1891 New Orleans Project
To commemorate the site of the 1891 lynching of 11 Italian Americans in New Orleans, the Commission for Social Justice partnered with the American Italian Federation of the Southeast to sponsor a commemorative plaque at the site of the lynching.
Anti-Defamation and Positive Imaging
OSDIA and its anti-defamation branch, The Commission for Social Justice®, need your help to put an end to the persistent negative stereotyping of Italian Americans in advertising, entertainment and the media. We often call upon our members and supporters to participate in national campaigns, but you can also do something to make a difference in your state and community.
Cross-Cultural Collaboration
The Commission for Social Justice frequently works with other ethnic groups to promote social justice and respect. Working closely with groups like the Native American Guardians Association, we strive to promote cross cultural collaboration and respect.
Columbus Day Advocacy
For generations, millions of Italian Americans have observed Columbus Day as a meaningful expression of identity and pride. Despite ongoing efforts to diminish or eliminate the holiday, the CSJ firmly supports its continued recognition as an important part of Italian American history and heritage.
